The Incomparable Wines of the Costa Brava’s Wine Region

Vino Emporda

A Glimpse into Castillo Perelada Winery’s Limited Edition Wines

Nestled in the midst of spectacular scenery, close to the Pyrenees Mountains, and stunning cobalt blue coastline lies the Emporda Wine Region, the Costa Brava’s local wine region. This small wine region has a variety of soils unlike any other place in the world: slate slopes, sandy valleys, fluvial sediment, clay-silt, gravel soils, which are responsible for the unique, nuanced wines that are produced in this area.

One of the wineries of excellence in this wine region is the Perelada Winery. In fact, the wine making tradition at Perelada dates back to the Middle Ages. Every year, Castillo Perelada’s oenologists produce small quantities of a large variety of wines in an effort to study the influence of factors such as the maturity of the grapes at the time of harvesting, the soil type, irrigation, and sun exposure, among other things.

Castillo Perelada is known for micro-vinification and experimentation, of which the very best of the wines become part of the limited Ex Ex collection. One of our particular favorites is Perelada’s EX EX 7, with a limited edition of only 2,918 bottles produced. The 2005 vintage made of the Monastrell grape variety was so exceptional that it has been released as a monovarietal wine in the Castillo Perelada’s Ex Ex Collection. It was aged for thirteen months in French oak barrels.

It has a very deep rich cherry red color and a complex, spicy, varietal aroma. In the mouth it is tasty, fresh and persistent. This is a very well-balanced wine, with an excellent tannic structure and a marked personality. It has a potent and complex aroma with notes of ripe fruit.
